Last night I dreamed that I was back living in Paris. I stopped to buy a ticket for the metro and then joined the rushing masses of commuters and made my way onto the train. Just as I was trying to figure out which exit I needed to take to exit onto the correct side of the Champs-Elysees, I woke up. The French chatter in my mind ceased and my morning started en anglais. Aaaargh! What a cruel April Fool’s trick for my slumbering mind to play on me! Harumph. I grumpily got showered and dressed and made my way downstairs to make Squirrel’s oatmeal. As I was waited for the oatmeal to cook I turned on my laptop and started going through some emails.
Thus was my state of mind when I stumbled across an email that my mom had sent me a couple of months ago that started with the following line: “Extremely dangerous knowledge, dispense on a need to know basis only.” Uh oh. What followed was a recipe for a single-serving 5-minute chocolate mug cake. B-A-D news.
Yes, I made it. In my defense I waited until a bit later in the morning and had Squirrel help me mix up some of the ingredients and then we watched it cook in the microwave together. I even let her help me eat it. But I also must confess that it was my lunch, and no, I’m not feeling particularly repentant about it.
Although it wasn’t Paris, it was chocolate, and that helped put a bit of a smile back on my grouchy face. This is not the best chocolate cake I’ve ever had, but for 5 minutes of my time it was delicious and well worth the calories. Seriously, 5 minutes! A couple of minutes to mix up the ingredients,
and then three minutes in the microwave.
When those three minutes are up, you have a mug filled with hot moist chocolate cake. Oh darn.
No Foolin’ 5-Minute Chocolate Mug Cake
Adapted from an email recipe
1 serving
1 large mug
4 Tbsp. flour
4 Tbsp. sugar
2 Tbsp. cocoa
1 large egg
3 Tbsp. milk
3 Tbsp. oil
1/4 cup chocolate chips (plus some extra for sprinkling on top when it comes out of the microwave)
a small splash of vanilla extract
1. Add dry ingredients to mug and mix well.
2. Add the egg and mix thoroughly.
3. Pour in the milk and oil and mix well.
4. Add the 1/4 cup of chocolate chips and vanilla extract, and mix again.
5. Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts (high). The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don’t be alarmed! Remove from microwave and sprinkle top of cake with chocolate chips.
6. Allow to cool a little, and then dig in!

Oh, Yum. Diet tip: Eat a chocolate mug cake before each meal. It’ll take the edge off your appetite, and you’ll eat less.
Wow – I love it! I think this may have made my Friday Favorites this week! The mug is definitely portion control… and how can you beat chocolate cake in 5 minutes?
I tried this too, isn’t it deliciously dangerous??
Sounds wonderful – a perfect dessert!
Awesome! Although now that I’ve lost 20 pounds, I don’t know if I needed to know about 5 minute chocolate cake… :)
Made this with the boy this morning. We had it without the extra choc chips and it was still nice :)
I think a little whipped cream on top would be divine! :)
This is a gift! I rarely bake because it’s just me and Mr. Noodle – a whole cake is a lot for 2 people to polish off. Now I can satisfy my cravings one serving at a time. This is the good kind of bad!
Sleeping and dreaming when you have a brand new bub? This is good news at least, even if your lovely Parisian dreams don’t come true. I won’t make that cake. I promise myself I won’t and I won’t tell my husband about that recipe either. Never ever, ever.
this is a great idea!
That is AWESOME! I have always wanted to try this. I am all about the instand gratification. Or maybe, gratifiCAKEtion. I’ll be linking.
I’ve seen this recipe all over the internet and I’ve always read it was really gross! But if you liked it, I trust you! I just made brownies but I might make this when they run out!
Ohhh… I’ll certainly be trying this! I’m so excited about having a kitchen again!
If I want to bake it in the oven, how long should I leave it?
oh my god. this will probably change my life. for the worse, according to my doctor. har har
love the blog. i follow now, ok?
Oh I love this! My dad used to make us cakes in styrofoam cups (but you had to make an entire cake batter recipe to have some)! This is WAY better.
Thanks for sharing FujiMama and FujiNana!
I love this idea!!! I love it!! I have been looking for something that I could send to my nieces for fun.. they have little individual pudding packs now from Jell-o and I was wanting to send them their own “birthday cake” for my daughters birthday.. all they would have to add is the egg and milk!! AWESOME!!!
Sounds incredible. That is dangerous information!
What a good idea to make it with your girl. Now I know what I’m going to do with Shannon yesterday.
On another note, my computer crashed and I lost all my recipes, so I’m so glad to have your blog to refill my book
i was just thinking of making molten lava cake then i saw your post. this is quicker and i need my chocolate now!!! :) thanks for sharing…looks delicious!
This looks dangerous, but in a good way! I must give it a try!
I tried this tonight. And you know… it wasn’t too bad! I had a little whipped cream and it was a tasty quick little treat for my daughter. Thanks!!! I think… ;)
Souds too good to be true. Can’t wait to see for myself.
That recipe turned up on another list I subscribe to. I’ll have to try it now. BTW we make our breakfast oatmeal/porridge in the microwave – no messy saucepans.
Sounds delicious…I will definitely have to try it, cake for breakfast or lunch…you are my kind of gal.
Oh this is a recipe of the most dangerous kind! This will definitely go in my arsenal of stress-relieving recipes! Mwah!
Just made this! My kids loved watching it “bake” in the microwave. Yummy!
mmmm, chocolate cake! i may have to do this one desperate night soon :)
I just made this and it was very good and totally hit the spot. thanks for easy recipes.
The chocolate chips sunk to the bottom. hmmm… Note: I added 1/4 tsp. instant espresso powder for a more intense chocolate flavor!
Dangerous information indeed. :) This is so great when you have the chocolate craving but don’t want to whip up a whole batch of brownies. Besides, as we all know, anything cooked in a cute mug has no calories.
Can’t wait to try this!
DH and I made this Friday night as a treat. The great thing about your recipe is that I can make mine vegan and he can have his the regular way. This was SUPER yummy! And we don’t have the rest of the cake to finish. Nice treat!
I tried this cake and it was a lot of fun and tasted really good. I posted some details on my blog here: http://simplerthanyouthink.blogspot.com/2009/06/5-min-chocolate-mud-cake-in-cup.html
Awesome recipe. I’m so crazy about it that I wrote a whole book that builds on this recipe, but also adds baking tips and decorating ideas. It’s called “101 Recipes for Microwave Mug Cakes.” Feel free to visit my site where you’ll find two free microwave mug cake recipes: http://www.microwavemugcakes.com.
I personally found it to be a bit egg-heavy. It was okay, but I wish I’d have just made a standard chocolate cake and had some of that instead.
Hey , Happy April Fool’s Day!!
This guy dies and is sent to Hell. Satan meets him and shows him the doors to three rooms and says he must choose one of the rooms to spend eternity in.
So Satan opens the first door. In the room there are people standing in cow manure up to their necks. The guy says, “No, please show me the next room.”
Satan shows him the next room and this has people with cow manure up to their noses. And so he says no again.
Finally, Satan shows him the third and final room. This time there are people in there with cow manure up to their knees drinking cups of tea and eating cakes.
So the guy says, “I’ll choose this room.” Satan says O.K.
The guy is standing in there eating his cake and drinking his tea thinking, “Well, it could be worse”, when the door opens. Satan pops his head around, and says,
“O.K., tea-break is over. Back on your heads!”
Happy April Fool’s Day!
