Sneak Peak: What am I?

in Culinary Adventurism

Next week we’ll be making a dish that uses this beauty:

What am I

Any guesses?  Leave your best guess in the comments (it doesn’t matter if you’re right!) and I will use the random number generator to pick one of your comments and send the winner some of this ingredient so they can make next week’s mystery dish too!  Anyone is welcome to enter (international readers included)!  I’ll keep the comments open until Tuesday, February 2nd, 2009, 10 pm PST.  Good luck! Comments are now closed!  The answer, and the winner will be announced in the next post!

linda January 29, 2010 at 1:45 pm

My guess is bean curd noodles.

Denise January 29, 2010 at 1:49 pm

some sort of noodles… lets say rice noodles

jenjenk January 29, 2010 at 2:02 pm

Kampyo. Dried gourd.

Terra January 29, 2010 at 2:16 pm

To me it looks like either a type of noodle or pastry dough.

Lizzie January 29, 2010 at 2:16 pm

They are noodles, I’m sure… too heavy-looking for rice. So they must be either wheat-based, or soy-based… that bean curd guess sounds likely. I think I agree they are bean curd noodles!
I’m interested to see what you will make with these.

LollyChops January 29, 2010 at 2:23 pm

It’s got to be noodles right!!!!

kelli January 29, 2010 at 2:29 pm

fresh noodles..of some sort!!!! …whatever it is..i bet it’s gonna be GOOD! Can’t wait to find out!

Marc @ NoRecipes January 29, 2010 at 2:34 pm

Definitely kanpyo (dried squash). Looks like Jen beat me to it:-)

Bob January 29, 2010 at 2:37 pm

I as going to say noodles too, but those other folks seem so certain. Heh. Hm, noodles made out of dried squash? ;)

Lyndsey January 29, 2010 at 2:42 pm

It looks like dried long strips of gourd. I can’t wait to see how you use them! :)

wendy January 29, 2010 at 2:45 pm

noodles? some kind of strange dried mushroom?

Fuji Nana January 29, 2010 at 3:00 pm

You’re all wrong. It’s that stretchy stuff we used to make potholders on looms when I was a kid.

Jennifer S January 29, 2010 at 3:26 pm

I have no idea! They look like noodles but they look very fibrous. I’m going to guess noodles anyway. :)

Clare Maree January 29, 2010 at 3:28 pm

Kanpyo

kayla January 29, 2010 at 4:02 pm

Mara @ What's For Dinner? January 29, 2010 at 5:21 pm

Amy January 29, 2010 at 5:46 pm

Deanna January 29, 2010 at 6:00 pm

Some type of dried gourd?

Sarah, Maison Cupcake January 29, 2010 at 6:33 pm

I want to say tripe but I know that is sooooo wrong

Paula - bell'alimento January 29, 2010 at 6:59 pm

Why I think it’s Kanpyō (干瓢?)

[email protected] January 29, 2010 at 7:06 pm

They look like thin Guimauve threads to me (Marshmallow in French)… but they obviously are not! I don’t know what Kanpyo is so I’ll follow this recipe with very much attention!

Julie January 29, 2010 at 7:26 pm

Noodles? >.<

The Cookie Girl January 29, 2010 at 7:32 pm

It’s totally Kampyo (dried gourd)
Are we making Sushi? :)

LindaH January 29, 2010 at 9:02 pm

I think they are Japanese gourd strips called kanpyo. Can be used in sushi. Usually seasoned or marinated. Very yummy.

Feriale Massabni January 29, 2010 at 9:24 pm

Kampyo , it is dried gourd ! I love it !

Satsuki January 29, 2010 at 10:09 pm

That’s Kanpyo! It is usually used as the center ingredient of Norimaki.

alexandra s.m. January 29, 2010 at 10:23 pm

Something dried for sure…?…maybe a dried vegetable something? Very intriguing ;-)

Kathy January 30, 2010 at 4:28 am

Kanpyou – dried gourd.

Mardi@eatlivetravelwrite January 30, 2010 at 5:06 am

It’s definitely a dried vegetable (gourd) of some sort…

Sally January 30, 2010 at 6:34 am

kampyo

JCSladcik January 30, 2010 at 6:40 am

My guess is kanpyo, which you can dye and use in rolling fancy New Year’s sushi.

Kaliis January 30, 2010 at 10:14 am

I LOVE Kampyo! It always goes in my onigiri.

Lori January 30, 2010 at 10:33 am

Kampyo – dried gourd. Used in norimaki sushi and my fave – Konbu Maki!!!

lu January 30, 2010 at 11:53 am

it must be quesillo /queso oaxaca

joey corelli January 30, 2010 at 10:04 pm

ah, the famous bandage noodles…yum!!! LOL!!!

Melissa Hodgen January 31, 2010 at 1:02 pm

First impressions = medical supplies
Second impression = noodles
Third impression = dried squid???

Juls @ Juls' Kitchen January 31, 2010 at 1:45 pm

so, let me guess… fresh rice noodles??
can’t wait to see the mysterious dish!!

Cait January 31, 2010 at 2:42 pm

Kanpyo noodles? Makes me want to head to Sweden for some!

Jean January 31, 2010 at 5:13 pm

At first, I thought it was some kind of bread dough, but by now, I am stumped!

Megan January 31, 2010 at 5:57 pm

Is it a type of dried fungus?

Dorothy January 31, 2010 at 6:42 pm

It’s kanpyo – love it in sushi!

Holly January 31, 2010 at 8:32 pm

Some sort of dried pasta? Or maybe a dried vegetable? I really have no idea with this one!

Amie February 1, 2010 at 4:59 am

My first guess was hand-stretched Mozzarella. But now i am thinking the strands are too skinny. Maybe Kampyo? How fun!

Susanna February 1, 2010 at 7:10 am

the texture is really reminding me of dried apples, but i would have to guess some sort of pasta- other thoughts were mozzarella or some sort of mushroom

Angela February 1, 2010 at 8:03 am

Dried gourd!

grace February 1, 2010 at 10:00 am

I want to say bean-curd but the texture is slightly different, so could it be dried gourd ribbons?

Nicole February 1, 2010 at 11:04 am

My guess is dried kampyo!

Nicole February 1, 2010 at 11:04 am

dried udon noodles?
the color seems right, but the texture seems un-noodle like

Amber February 1, 2010 at 12:08 pm

I’m going to say some sort of vegetable…. but really I have no idea!!

Sally February 2, 2010 at 10:54 am

I think it’s Kanpyō 干瓢
