This morning I went to The Japan Folk Crafts Museum with Ms. M and Ms. N. I have been wanting to go here for a while, and so was happy when they agreed to go with me! The museum houses approximately 17,000 items made by anonymous craftspeople mainly from Japan, but also from China, Korea, Africa, England, and elsewhere. The collection includes pottery, paintings and scrolls, textiles, metal work, lacquer ware, wood work, bamboo work, stone work, stone rubbings, sculpture, leather work, straw work, glass work, dolls, slipware, and other crafts. The museum also has 4 special exhibitions each year. The current special exhibition is titled “Textiles: The Soul of India”, featuring textiles from all over India. I wasn’t allowed to take pictures inside the museum, but I snapped a couple outside because the building itself is beautiful.
After we went through the museum we walked over to a little local shop and bought takoyaki (たこ焼き or 蛸焼) (fried octopus dumplings) and okonomiyaki (お好み焼き) (a kind of pan-fried batter cake with shredded cabbage and other veggies, as well as some kind of meat/seafood) for lunch, then walked over to a nearby park to sit and eat.
Any day when I can combine time with friends, a good museum visit, and yummy food is a day well spent!
I can’t believe it is already November 9th–that means I have successfully posted for 9 consecutive days! And you probably thought I wouldn’t last a week . . . .
