Caterpillar Roll

in Uncategorized

Today’s Earth treat for Earth Week is another bug.
I LOVE chocolate, so you know that I loved those Ladybug Bites. Today’s bug is another species that is near and dear to my heart: sushi, or to be more specific, a Caterpillar Roll. This is not a caterpillar roll like the ones served in many sushi joints here in the US (with avocado on the outside), but a simple spicy crab roll presented to be reminiscent of a caterpillar. This dish is definitely another kid pleaser. There are so many different ways you could style this roll, but I went with quick and simple, since my time is at a premium these days. This roll is quick to make and delish to eat!
Make your sushi rice (if you need to learn how, this is a great tutorial), then grab your makisu (bamboo food rolling mat), sheets of nori (seaweed), spicy sauce, crab (I just used some flaked imitation crab, but you can use whatever you want!), cucumber slices, and avocado slices. For my spicy sauce I mix up 4 parts mayonnaise and 1 part sriracha. If you want your sauce less/more spicy, adjust the sriracha accordingly!
Spread the sushi rice out on your nori,
Then add your crab, cucumber, and avocado,
followed by a bit of spicy sauce,
and then roll it up! (If you’ve never rolled sushi, there are all kinds of YouTube videos out there that you can learn from, like this one.)
Finally, cut your roll into pieces and arrange it on a plate to look like a caterpillar. For a head, make a small ball of sushi rice, cut a slice of olive in half and press into the head for eyes.

That is so cute! As soon as the bub is old enough to eat and appreciate it, I’ll be making one of those. Gotta get him/her addicted to sushi asap :)

I’m noticing a trend. A new child named “Bug,” ladybug bites, a caterpillar roll, and wayback, wasp larva. I must admit you are starting to give bugs a boost. I look forward to the next creepy, crawly, wiggly installment.

That’s adorable, except it looks like a panda to me (which is way cuter than caterpillars). Great job!

You’re definitely winning points for creativity! I’m not the biggest fan of avocado on sushi, so a spicy crab roll disguised as a caterpillar sounds absolutely delightful.
