Happy Haunting!

in Uncategorized

Happy Halloween! We have certainly been busy here chez Fuji Mama. Hubby just got back last night from a 10-day trip to the US. Squirrel is very happy to have her daddy back. We tried to stay busy while he was gone. We went back to Kawagoe with some friends for a big harvest festival, went to a flea market, went on lots of walks, worked on Squirrel’s “scary” Halloween face, etc.

I finished knitting Squirrel’s Halloween costume just in time for her to wear it! We went “trick-or-treating” to a nearby friend’s house, just so we can tell Squirrel in years to come about her “First Halloween”.

Halloween has been a recent adoption here in Japan. The only trick-or-treating occurs in the neighborhoods with large concentrations of foreigners. However companies have quickly jumped on the Halloween bandwagon and I saw Halloween items popping up everywhere, like this “pumpkin cheesecake” in a cup that I found in a convenience store near my house the other day!

Have I ever mentioned how kind and polite the Japanese people can be? The other day I was out with Squirrel in her stroller and there were some workmen that had a big hole opened up in the sidewalk and they were doing something that was making some dust. They had a guy posted to guide people safely past the construction (this is very normal in any construction situation here in Japan). When the guy saw Squirrel and I coming he turned and asked the guys to stop their machinery to let us pass so that Squirrel wouldn’t have to go through with all of the dust in the air. As soon as we passed they started up their machines again. How nice! I have a hard time imagining this same scenario in the US.
