Japanese Pop Quiz Answers + Microplane Winners!

in Uncategorized

First things first! The winners of the two Microplane Graters/Zesters were selected late last night by Random.org, and they are Liz and Rane!  There were several commentors named Liz, so to clarify, this was the Liz that won:
Rane said:
Congrats! I’ll be in touch later today to get your snail mail addresses so that I can get those out to you!
Okay, now for the answers to our little pop quiz!  I showed you this picture and asked you to name the items:
Many of you came up with the right answers (bravo!), though I have to admit that I probably enjoyed some of the wrong ones much more!  The number of you that guessed that #3 was eyeballs was hilarious (whether you were serious or not)! But I have to say that maybe my all-time favorite answer was Bob’s answer to #1.  He said, “1) Modesty leaves. You know, like in all those paintings of Biblical folk.” That one still has me giggling!
Ok, the CORRECT answers are:
1) Shiso leaves: These are “aojiso,” or green shiso leaves (there are also purple shiso leaves). Shiso is in the mint family, and is also known as Perilla or the Beefsteak Plant.  It is often eaten with sashimi, or as an herb in a variety of dishes.  The flavor is quite strong and reminiscent of basil and cilantro.
2) Ramune soda, Lychee flavor: Ramune is a carbonated drink with a very unique bottle design.  The bottle is made from glass and sealed with a glass marble.  To open the bottle, you push a little plastic piece into the bottle opening to push the marble inward. This particular bottle of Ramune is Lychee flavored.
3) Mitarashi Dango: Little chewy dumplings made from rice flour served covered with a sweet and savory sauce made from soy sauce, sugar, and starch.  SO YUMMY!

Coming Sunday: Mac Attack!

Thank you for choosing me as a winner!!! I NEVER win anything! And one of the missing pieces of my kitchen collection is a microplane!! I love your blog. It makes me homesick for Japan, but in a good way.

Congratulations to your winners. Not easy items to identify. That's why I kept my foolishness to myself. Have a great day.

Just a funny bit of trivia — ramune is actually the Japanese phonetic spelling of lemonade, and what most of my Japanese friends call ramune in English. (Not sure why the final "do" is left out in this case, but it is!)

Being asked "Would you like a bottle of lemonade?" and then being handed small but heavy bottle of what tasted like Sprite with a marble in it was startling the first time!

Am THRILLED to find your blog!

Liz– I'm so sorry! I've tried contacting you through your blog, but haven't had any luck. If you read this, please send me your address so that I can send you your prize! (Just in case, my name is spelled with an "a" at the end–Rachael. People leave it out a lot!)
