In this day and age we risk teaching our kids that milk magically appears in cartons, chickens come headless and plucked, and pumpkins come from a display in the supermarket. We are altogether too separated from the reality of how things get into our kitchens. I, for one, am all for a little education.
Pumpkin Palooza provided the perfect excuse to take Squirrel for some hands on experience with the origin of the pumpkin. I just don’t want her growing up thinking those beautiful lumpy orange globes come from a big box in the supermarket. I want her to know that reality is a bit dirtier and way more fun.
We drove out to The Pumpkin Patch at Live Oak Canyon Christmas Tree Farm in Redlands (California).
The Pumpkin Patch offers a huge pumpkin patch (over 20-acres in size) where you can select and pick your own pumpkins.
They also have a pumpkin tent where they offer pre-picked pumpkins, including a wide selection of heirloom varieties, Indian corn, gourds, winter squash, and corn stalks.
There is also a gift shop where Fall and Halloween decorations can be purchased. There are many activities for families such as a petting enclosure filled with baby goats and sheep, a hay castle to climb on, rides for older kids such as a 35-foot tall saber tooth slide, and tractor drawn hay rides.
There is no entrance fee and the ambiance is fantastic.
Now Squirrel knows where pumpkins come from . . . at least until she forgets and we do it all over again next year.
Pumpkin Palooza will be coming to a close in just a few hours, so check back for the last yummy pumpkin recipe!
