“Nothing would be more tiresome than eating and drinking if God had not made them a pleasure as well as a necessity.” ~Voltaire
Our little Squirrel is a foodie in the making. She is willing to try new things, loves a wide variety of foods, and takes great pleasure in eating her favorites. One of her favorite snacks is nori (edible seaweed), specifically “kangoku nori” or “korean seaweed,” referencing a style of seaweed preparation in Korea where the seaweed is dryed and then cut into very thin square sheets which are seasoned with sesame oil and salt and then toasted and cut into smaller squares and eaten as a side dish or a snack. I got into the habit of buying packages of this particular kind of nori while we were living in Japan (you can buy it in most grocery stores, at least in Tokyo), and now have to stock up on it whenever we go to an Asian market here in the US to support our habit. Squirrel could eat package after package of it if you let her. Luckily this is a wonderful healthy snack rich in vitamins, and only has about 10 calories per package, so it’s a snack that I don’t feel guilty giving her. I always put her in her high chair to eat it, otherwise she’ll get it everywhere. I tear a corner of the packaging open and pull out the little plastic container that holds the sheets of nori (it usually comes in packages of 10 little squares) and set them in front of her. This is what follows (Pim, these pictures are for you):

Do you think she enjoyed that?

She is such a cutie :) She looks totally enjoyed eating that!
Amaya is obsessed with korean seaweed. I totally question how much they tell you on the nutrition facts, though, because they're obviously loaded with sesame oil.
Which is why they are so delicious!
What an amazing little girl! I have trouble convincing my son to eat mashed potatoes! Thanks for sharing.
How adorable are those photos! In that last one, she looks so much like you!
And yes, she's sure to be a foodie. How could she not be in your family!
I love Korean seaweed and can also eat it like potato chips (I think it's the high salt content). Just the other day I had this craving for grilled mochi, rolled in soy with sugar and wrapped with crisp Korean seaweed. Ahh… my mouth is watering just thinking about it… I'm going to have to find some supplies here soon.
These photos are just too cute for words! Another thing to add to the Japan shopping list.
She's adorable!
I was given a box of special Korean nori by a friend who just got back from Korea… I've been enjoying it (although perhaps not as much as Squirrel would!)
Oh my heck…she is growing up so fast!!! Those are the cutest pictures ever!!
Matthew is obsessed with nori and would eat only that if I let him – kangoku nori is his favorite, too! :) I must admit it is REALLY addictive – for mama, too. Now Joel is starting to get into it as well. And Stephen loves anything and everything – even natto! I love having easy access to all these great healthy foods over here in Japan.
My kids LOVE "geem," the Korean word for the dried seaweed with sesame oil and salt. They both put rice in it, and my daughter now puts salmon or just about anything in it at dinnertime.
She is so cute! The last two pics are my favorite! LOVE IT!!!
Ahh… She's so dang cute.
Mmmm…pari pari nori is just the best. I always have to wrap my onigiri and rice seperately just so I can keep it pari pari :)
I LOVE those photos!! I can't believe how much she's grown!!! (BTW the 2nd to the last shot is my fav.)
So adorable! I do think you have a foodie in the making… nothing wrong with that! :)
She's certainly adorable! My kids are like that with tofu! Every time I order Age Dashi Tofu at our favorite Japanese place I have to fight the kids off for a taste of it!
Amazing! I wish Shannon wouldn't run from anything green as if it were the plague. Oh and thank you so much for the recipe. I'm amazed you remembered, because I'd almost forgotten. But I'm so glad you did.
Oh, we love that seaweed as well! The Vietnamese store by me has a wasabi flavored kind, but I'm the only one who likes that one.
I just said a little prayer that I would have babies who love lots of foods! What a little doll!
She is gorgeous! Can I ask you? Have you lived in Japan? I see a lot of Japanese culture stuff in your blog. I’m half American half Japanese, born and raised in Japan, went to American school there. Please come visit my blog anytime!
