Thanksgiving Recap

in Uncategorized

For those of you who celebrate it, how was your Thanksgiving? Ours was fabulous! I spent most of Wednesday cooking and tidying up the house, and then my in-laws arrived Wednesday night. My MIL and I spent most of yesterday morning cooking and then we all piled into my car and drove to my parents’ house for the big feast.

It was such a fun day, maybe one of my most favorite Thanksgivings ever. I got to see both of my brothers whom I haven’t seen in a while. My youngest brother is an art student at UCLA, so he has his own unique sense of style and totally cracks me up. A while back he asked me to make him a pumpkin hat like one I made Squirrel a while back and I just couldn’t refuse because I was dying to see him actually wear it. So I finished one up for him, brought it along, and made sure it fit before finishing it off and giving it to him. Yep, priceless.
There was tons of food and plenty of excitement. We started off with some simple appetizers–killer dip (another one of CQ’s fabulous recipes) and chips, cream cheese tortilla roll-ups, and then some yak rib-eye and yak burger (yep, that isn’t a typo, but you’ll have to wait to hear more about that later). Then, minutes before dinner was to go on the table (literally–the turkey was out and being carved, the rolls had 10 more minutes in the oven, the gravy had been started . . .) my mom reached into the refrigerator to grab a can of mandarin oranges that she had previously drained and put back in the refrigerator so that she could just dump it into the salad when the time came. She reached out to grab it with her left hand and somehow ended up slicing through most of her left index finger just below the middle joint on the lid. We took one look at it and it was obvious that she was going to need stitches. The thought of spending the rest of the evening in the hospital ER didn’t sit well with my mom (gee, I wonder why?) and so she called up a good friend who happens to be an emergency room PA who told her to come right over and she would take care of her. She ended up putting seven stitches in my mom’s finger! My mom was back in just a little over an hour with a smile on her face and a heavily bandaged finger.
My mom was a rockstar and never once looked like she was in any pain. In her absence I managed to overbrown the rolls (sigh), but everything else worked out okay.
We had a fabulous salad with an amazing raspberry vinaigrette on it, homemade rolls, green bean casserole, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry jelly, and turkey.
For dessert we had 4 different pies–key lime, pecan, pumpkin, and a cranberry almond frangipane tart.
At the end of the evening we all piled back into the car for the drive home happily stuffed to the gills. I love the holidays! I love the traditions and being together with family. This was the first time in a long while that we’ve been with family for Thanksgiving and it was absolutely wonderful. I hope your day was as wonderful (but maybe slightly less uneventful) than ours!

How long will you be eating the leftovers for?

Thanks everyone!

Contamination– I think we’ll be eating leftovers for years! Actually, it shouldn’t be as bad as that (though I LOVE Thanksgiving leftovers), because we split leftovers with my parents and brothers and us, and I still have a house full of guests who are helping us eat up ours. Still, it has now been several days since Thanksgiving and we STILL have leftovers! :-)

The meal looks delicious! How terrible for your mom to cut her finger, that’s awful! At least she didn’t have to go to the emergency room, that would have taken forever and to miss out on all of that yummy hot food would have been terrible! I hope your mom’s finger is feeling better now, 7 stitches was a lot!
