Team Fuji Goes for Gold

in Uncategorized

I love the Olympics and have so many good memories associated with watching them. This Olympics has been no exception as I have found myself swept up in the Michael Phelps mania, watching anxiously as our gymnasts rocketed and whirled their bodies around as if gravity didn’t apply to them, cheered on our runners and waterpolo team, etc. Normally this is the extent of my participation in the Olympics. This year however, I was called to action by my good friend Jackie. Jackie is half Chinese and an amazing cook. Jackie is hosting a Chinese Food Olympic Event in honor of the Olympics and her heritage.
The challenge was to “make or buy Chinese food and post about it before midnight of the closing ceremonies, Aug. 24th.” I would have loved to have done some cooking, but considering the state of my kitchen and the fact that we’re not even living in the new house yet, that was out of the question. I needed a different strategy. I decided that this would have to be a team event and I enlisted Mr. Fuji, Squirrel, and my parents to be members of Team Fuji. We suited up and drove out to the location of the event, The Lotus Garden, in San Bernardino, CA.
We ordered a variety of dishes including mapo tofu, szechuan green beans, and spicy garlic shrimp. The main purpose of our visit, however, was for the Peking duck (especially appropriate considering the locale of the Olympics). The other dishes were okay, not bad, but nothing special. The duck however, was fabulous–wonderfully juicy and aromatic and perfect in the pancakes with all the normal accoutrements. Just thinking about it makes me want to hop in the car and go for another round…
As we were leaving Squirrel mustered enough courage to hug one of the menacing looking guardian lions at the door. If that’s not Olympic material, I don’t know what is.

Squirrel is SOO cute! She needs to get together with my happy buddha baby and I’d say we’d have a gold medal pair! Oooo Peking Duck! I wish we had a good Chinese restaurant here!! Thanks for playing along and we’ll announce the winners Monday!

What a fun idea! I think going out for Chinese is a great idea! The really nice part is not having to clean up afterwards! The food looks wonderful…
