Pie & (Root) Beer Day

in Pie

Brown Bag Peach Pie and Root Beer

Monday was Pioneer Day here in Utah.  Pioneer Day is an official state holiday that is celebrated on July 24th every year to commemorate the entry of Brigham Young and the first group of Mormon pioneers into Utah’s Salt Lake Valley in 1847 and celebrate the bravery of the original settlers.  A few years ago someone started a new tradition with a play on the name Pioneer Day: Pie & Beer Day.  (Say both names out loud…get it?)  I thought it would be fun to add to our own Pioneer Day traditions with our own take on this holiday.  We don’t drink alcohol, so ours was a Pie & (Root) Beer Day.  I made my Brown Bag Peach Pie, but made a few tweaks so that it was vegan and gluten-free so I could eat it too!  I substituted Miyoko’s Kitchen Cultured Vegan Butter for regular butter (we are addicted to that stuff!), Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free 1-to-1 Baking Flour for all-purpose flour, and turbinado sugar in place of granulated sugar.  For our root beer we had my favorite Brigham’s Brew Root Beer.

Vegan and Gluten-Free Brown Bag Peach Pie

The pie was a hit!  Some of the “normal” eaters in our household took timid first bites and then quickly made the rest of their pieces of pie disappear.  (There’s something that scares people when they hear the words “vegan” and “gluten-free”!)  Bug started trying to negotiate pie for breakfast as she was getting ready for bed Monday night.  I stood my ground, but that didn’t deter her from trying to convince me that pie was the healthy choice for each meal all day yesterday.  “But Mom!  It’s VEGAN!”  Sorry Bug, it may be vegan, but it’s still a treat!  My mom’s side of the family celebrates Ice Cream for Breakfast Day every year, so maybe I should start our own Pie For Breakfast Day…  I had such a blast preparing our pie and “beer” that the wheels are already turning for next year.  If we’re in town I’m thinking we need to host a party where everyone brings their favorite pie to share.  You know me! I’ll take any excuse I can get to eat more pie!

I think I will be visiting next year on July 24th. I’ll need my own pie, please.
